Question 1

Is GPS Tracking Illegal?

Accepted Answer

If you own the trailer, dry van, or equipment, GPS tracking is generally legal in the United States. Using a trailer GPS tracker to monitor location, movement alerts, and prevent trailer theft is considered asset tracking, not personal surveillance. Most laws are designed to protect people from being tracked without consent. They do not prohibit tracking property you own or are authorized to operate. That's why GPS trailer tracking is widely used across construction, logistics, and fleet operations to protect valuable equipment. GPS tracking laws can vary by state and by how a tracking device is used. If you plan to track a trailer you do not own, or one operated by someone else, consent or disclosure may be required. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's always best to speak with an attorney in your area of intended use.

Question 2

What Is A Trailer Tracker?

Accepted Answer

A trailer tracker is a GPS tracking device that uses the Global Positioning System (GNSS) to pinpoint the exact location of your trailer or other nonpowered assets. These trackers can be installed on dry vans, flatbeds, or equipment trailers and connect with satellites to provide accurate location data in real time. This makes a trailer GPS tracker a key tool for fleet managers, manufacturers, and asset owners, offering instant movement alerts, geofence alerting, and reliable trailer tracking solutions.

Question 3

What Is The Best Way To Track A Trailer Location?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable way to track a trailer is with a dedicated GPS trailer tracker like Outlaw GPS. Unlike Bluetooth-based devices, it uses satellite and cellular networks to provide realtime GPS tracking, instant movement alerts, and route history. Attach it to your trailer or nonpowered asset, activate the device, and monitor trailers location, dry vans, or equipment from your phone or desktop. For maximum security, choose a tracker with geofence alerting, recovery mode, and app-based monitoring, ensuring you can prevent trailer theft and get answers quickly if a trailer is moved without permission.

Question 4

Is A GPS Trailer Tracker Better Than Apple AirTag?

Accepted Answer

When comparing Apple AirTags to GPS trackers like Outlaw GPS, it's important to know their best uses. AirTags are designed for personal belongings using Bluetooth signals to update their location within about 10 meters, which makes them easy to detect when used on vehicles, trailers, or nonpowered assets. Outlaw GPS Trailer Trackers are built for real-time trailer GPS tracking, fleet management, and asset protection. They use satellite and cellular networks, not Bluetooth, for precise location updates, instant movement alerts, geofence protection, and route history. AirTags are handy for everyday personal items, but Outlaw GPS is essential for trailers and fleets, offering undetectable, continuous tracking, recovery mode, and location accuracy that AirTags simply can't match.

Question 5

Is There A Mobile App For The Trailer GPS Tracker?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our trailer GPS tracker includes an easy-to-use app for iPhone and Android. You can also log in from any computer to view real-time location and up to one year of location history.

Question 6

Do I Need To Pay A Subscription Fee?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all real-time GPS trailer trackers require a subscription to cover the cellular data that powers realtime GPS tracking, instant movement alerts, and route history. For longer-term trailer tracking, we offer prepayment discounts: 10% off for 6 months, 25% off for one year, and 50% off for two years. Need a bigger plan? Talk with a sales rep for custom deals and maximize your trailer tracking solution savings.

Question 7

How Long Does The Battery Last On A Single Charge?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how often you ask it to report. Battery life and update interval trade against each other - a tracker reporting every three seconds is working far harder than one reporting every few minutes. On a single charge, Outlaw GPS runs one to two months at fast update intervals, and up to a year in low power mode where it reports less often. [PENDING CONFIRMATION WITH RYAN - do not publish until the low-power figure is reconfirmed, per the brief's note on FAQ C.] The rechargeable battery tops up from a standard USB charger, and the app sends a low battery warning well before it runs down, so a trailer never goes dark without warning. If an asset has its own power source and never leaves it, the hardwire kit removes charging from the equation entirely.

Question 8

Battery-Powered Or Hardwired GPS - Which Do I Need?

Accepted Answer

Battery-powered is the right answer for most trailers. The magnet mount means no wiring, no installer and no permanent hole in anything, and you can move the tracker from a dump trailer this week to a skid steer next week. You charge it on a schedule and the app warns you first. A hardwired GPS makes sense when the asset carries its own power and never leaves it - a company vehicle, a powered reefer, equipment with a battery you can tap. It never needs charging. It also cannot be moved to another asset without pulling the wire out. One thing neither of them is: a passive GPS logger. Passive units record a route and only show it to you once you physically go and collect the device. Outlaw GPS is realtime - the location comes to you while the trailer is still moving, which is the only version that helps during a theft.

Question 9

What Does A Trailer GPS Tracker Cost Per Month?

Accepted Answer

The tracker itself is a one-time cost. After that, realtime GPS tracking needs a data plan, because the device carries its own SIM and sends location data over a cellular network - that is what the monthly subscription pays for. Every real-time tracker from every brand works this way; the ones advertising no subscription costs are either Bluetooth tags or passive loggers. Ours is pay-as-you-go by the month, with discounts for paying ahead: 10% off six months, 25% off an annual subscription, and 50% off two years. Running several trailers? Ask for a fleet quote and we will price it properly.

Question 10

Can I See Trip History And Past Location Data?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every location update the tracker sends gets stored, so you have trip history going back up to a year - every stop, every route, every time an asset left the yard. Open a date in the app and replay it. That record does two jobs. It settles arguments about where an asset was and when, which is worth a lot on a billing dispute. And if a trailer is taken, it gives police a route to work with rather than a description. Realtime updates tell you what is happening now; trip history tells you what already happened.

Question 11

Does The Tracker Work Where There Is No Cell Service?

Accepted Answer

The tracker gets its position from satellites, which reach almost everywhere. Sending that position to you needs a cellular signal. [PENDING CONFIRMATION WITH MANUFACTURER - the brief flags this behaviour as unverified; do not publish the dead-zone/backlog claim until confirmed, per FAQ G's note.] In practice that matters on remote jobsites and back roads far more than in a storage yard. If a trailer is stolen it has to come back into coverage to be useful to a thief, and that is when you get the location.

Question 12

How To Keep Your Trailer From Being Stolen?

Accepted Answer

Install a GPS Trailer Tracker: use a hidden GPS tracker for trailers like Outlaw GPS. With realtime GPS tracking, instant movement alerts, and geofence protection, you'll know immediately if your trailer is moved. Use Recovery Mode: if a trailer is stolen, activate recovery mode to send a live location link to authorities for fast retrieval. Secure Your Trailer Physically: lock couplers, wheels, and hitches, and park in well-lit, secure areas whenever possible. Monitor Route History: keep an eye on your trailer's route history to detect unusual patterns or unauthorized usage. Regularly Check Location Updates: using the free mobile app for your trailer GPS tracking solution, review trailer locations and status to stay ahead of potential theft, in real time or by reviewing historical data up to a year back.

Question 13

Can A Cell Phone Detect The GPS Tracker?

Accepted Answer

No, your phone can't detect Outlaw GPS trailer trackers. Outlaw GPS isn't a Bluetooth tag like an AirTag that pings phones and triggers alerts. This is a premium hidden GPS trailer tracker built for realtime GPS tracking through satellites and cellular networks - not Bluetooth. That means your phone can't "see" it. AirTags are designed for small items like keys or backpacks, not trailers or nonpowered assets. Outlaw GPS operates silently, with no notifications, no pop-ups, and no chance of detection by standard devices. Only dedicated GPS or RF scanners could pick it up - and most trailer thieves don't carry those. Outlaw GPS trailer trackers are built for serious work: preventing trailer theft, monitoring fleets, tracking dry vans, and protecting high-value assets. With realtime location updates, movement alerts, geofence protection, and route history, you always know where your trailers are and can recover them quickly if needed.

Question 14

What Is A Hidden GPS Tracker?

Accepted Answer

A hidden GPS tracker is a GPS device small enough to be concealed on the asset it protects. It has no screen and makes no sound, so it can sit under a trailer frame or inside a tool box without being noticed. GPS tracking devices in this class take their position from satellites and send it over the cellular network, which is what separates them from Bluetooth tags. For trailers, dry vans and equipment, hidden trackers do two jobs: they tell you where the asset is right now, and they tell you the moment it moves. On property you own, that is asset tracking, not surveillance.

Question 15

Can A Tracker Detector Or Bug Detector Find Outlaw GPS?

Accepted Answer

A consumer tracker detector or bug detector hunts for a radio signal. Outlaw GPS only transmits in short bursts when it sends its location, so between updates there is nothing continuous to lock onto. A phone will not find it at all - it is not a Bluetooth tag, so it never pings nearby devices and never triggers an unknown-tracker alert the way an Apple AirTag does. To be straight about it: a professional RF sweep with proper equipment can find any device that transmits, and that includes this one. Most trailer thieves are not carrying one.

Question 16

Can You Track A Stolen Trailer?

Accepted Answer

Yes - you can absolutely track a stolen trailer with a GPS trailer tracker. A hidden trailer tracking device gives you realtime location, instant movement alerts, and recovery mode, so you always know exactly where your trailer is, even if a thief hauls it away. When the trailer is stolen, the tracker sends realtime GPS location to your phone, geofence alerts the moment it leaves your lot, route history showing every stop along the way, and a live link you can share with police for fast recovery. With a reliable trailer tracking solution, you can prevent trailer theft, protect dry vans and nonpowered assets, and recover stolen equipment quickly - often within hours.

Question 17

How Do Geofence Alerts Work?

Accepted Answer

Geofence alerts (branded on-site as Insta-Fence) let you draw a virtual boundary around your trailer. If the trailer moves, you'll know right away by text, email, or push notification. You control the alerts online and can share access with your team if needed.
